New visual newsletter, California in Pictures, launched through the partnership of CatchLight and CalMatters

In summary

This is just the latest collaboration between CatchLight and CalMatters, whose shared goal is to tell California's story.

A new monthly newsletter, California in Pictures, spotlights photojournalism from across the state, providing a glimpse into daily life and the extraordinary moments that define California.

CalMatters brings you this newsletter as part of our partnership with CatchLight, which focuses on visual storytelling. We hope this new newsletter can serve as a monthly postcard from across the state.

“Working at CatchLight gives me the opportunity and privilege to see California through the lens of incredibly talented and dedicated photojournalists,” says CatchLight Editor-in-Chief Jenny Stratton. “This new visual collaboration is an opportunity to illuminate more people, places and stories from across the Golden State, one image at a time.”

CatchLight and CalMatters became partners in 2022, supporting the work of Larry Valenzuela and enhancing CalMatters' critical journalism through visual reporting collaborations. Previous collaborations have documented homeless Californians, showing the personal struggles with wage theft and giving students the opportunity to tell their own stories about learning and living during the pandemic.

“Our partnership provides an even greater opportunity to tell California’s story,” said CalMatters Editor-in-Chief Kristen Go. “A visual newsletter is an extraordinary opportunity to show people the great diversity of this state while capturing the challenges and successes we face.”

The free newsletter starts on May 1st. Please subscribe today.

CalMatters is a nonpartisan, nonprofit journalism company based in Sacramento that explains how the California State Capitol works and why it matters. It works with more than 130 media partners across the state who have long-standing and deep relationships with their local audiences, including Embarcadero Media.
