2024 quarterback unit rankings: With Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning, Texas leads the top 10

With spring training in the books and the second transfer portal window closed, it's time to begin our summer series evaluating position unit rankings for 2024.

Of course, the quarterbacks are in the spotlight on Day 1.

Managing a quarterback room has never been more difficult in today's transfer portal era.

Boys want to play. Immediately. So depth is rare even in the best programs. However, Oregon and Georgia have each taken different approaches to building their quarterback rooms, while Ohio State and Texas have done good jobs accumulating blue-chip talent — and then keeping them in town.

Notably, this is not a ranking of the best individual quarterbacks in 2024.

Shedeur Sanders could be one of the best next season. The same goes for Noah Fifita. But the depth behind the two Big 12 gunslingers is questionable.

This makes the top 10 quarterback rooms in 2024:

Steve Sarkisian is blessed with the best quarterback situation in America in 2024: He has a top-five starter in Quinn Ewerswho has the talent to become the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Then he did Arch Manning He's waiting in the wings, and the former top recruit could be a difference-maker for the Longhorns this fall if Ewers, who has missed games the past two seasons, is injured. Even freshman signees Trey Owens looked promising in the spring game at Texas.

Somehow, the Buckeyes exited the second portal window with all five scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Will Howard And Devin Brown compete for the starting job while 5-star rookies move on Julian Sayin is also on their tail for playing time.

Lincoln Kienholz remains a development option and a 5-star rookie Air Noland could compete for the QB1 role in 2025 if he can pressure Sayin.

Ryan Day must decide who his man will be in Ohio State's all-in 2024 season, but given the options, it's a problem most other coaches in the country wish they had.

The Ducks lost two-year starter Bo Nix, who was 22-5 at Oregon, and former top recruit Ty Thompson to a transfer, but their quarterback room is as healthy as ever with the addition of the veteran starter Dillon Gabrielformer 5-star UCLA transfer Dante Moore and 4-star freshman Luke Moga.

Oregon has also managed to hold its own so far Austin Novosad — a promising redshirt freshman, Dan Lanning, transferred from Baylor in the 2023 cycle.

Gabriel, who led the Big 12 in passing and touchdowns at Oklahoma in 2023, should put up huge numbers in Will Stein's offense while Moore and Novosad battle for the backup role and the job in 2025.

Carson Beck could be the No. 1 quarterback in the country in 2024, and while the Bulldogs don't have a definitive No. 2 yet, they have good options at the redshirt sophomore Shooter Stockton (three years in the system) and recent transfer addition Jaden Rashada.

Rashada spent last season starting a handful of games at Arizona State, but the former 4-star quarterback is willing to take a developmental season before struggling with Stockton and the freshman Ryan Puglisi for the launch performance next fall.

Wouldn't Alabama have lost 5 stars? Julian Sayin According to Ohio State, the Tide's quarterback room in 2024 could be second only to Texas.

Jalen Milroe is back and a potential Heisman Trophy contender Kalen DeBoer brought the former 4-star signee from Washington Austin Mack with him to Tuscaloosa. Ty Simpson, a former 5-star who had a strong spring, is still there as is Dylan Lonerganwho was also highly recruited and caused a stir last summer.

The Irish have to be happy with their quarterback room starting in 2024 Marcus Freeman has a potential veteran starter in the Duke transfer Riley Leonard There are also two talented underclassmen in CJ Carr and Steve Angeli, both of whom made noise this spring when Leonard was sidelined with ankle surgery.

Ole Miss has a solid stable of quarterbacks led by the former USC 5 star Jaxson Dartwho is the Rebels' solid starter and one of the SEC's best quarterbacks in 2024. Behind Dart is Lane Kiffin could turn to the former LSU transfer Walker Howard or Austin Simmons if necessary.

It will be interesting to see how Kiffin navigates the post-Dart world next season, but for now, Ole Miss' quarterback room is one of the best in the country.

LSU lost the Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Danielsbut the Tigers held on Garrett Nussmeier There is a reason why this is the case, and the country will see why this fall. Just in case, Brian Kelly also added some interesting insurance to the QB room, securing the Vandy transfer AJ Swann (27 touchdowns, nine picks in his career).

The Gators have one of the most intriguing quarterback situations in 2024. Graham Mertz returns, and the former Wisconsin transfer was much better than most expected last season (20 touchdowns to just three interceptions, 73% completion).

Nevertheless, there is a 5-star newcomer waiting in the starting blocks DJ Lagwaywho decided to maintain his commitment Billy Napier despite the head coach’s much-rumored “hot seat.” Lagway impressed in the spring and could push for playing time in early 2024, despite Mertz's strong debut season in Gainesville just a year ago.

The Aggies have one of the wilder, ceiling-to-floor quarterback rooms in the country this fall. Mike Elko inherited a trio of potential high-upside arms… but minimal experience overall.

Connor Weigman struggled to stay healthy for two seasons, but when he was available, the former 5-star recruit showed his talent to be the best quarterback in College Station since Johnny Manziel. Jaylen Henderson And Marcel Reedtwo former blue-chip signees, put up big numbers (nearly 10.0 yards per attempt) in relief.
