This community opportunity is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community, get outdoors, and learn more about the area's abundant natural resources. Per Linda Mead, President and CEO of D&R Greenway Land Trust: “This scholarship will enhance both the educational and professional experience of the selected candidate, who will become a member of a larger cohort of the Alliance for Watershed Education.”

Ms. Mead further shared the historical and cultural significance of the D&R Greenway, stating, “The story of the preservation of Point Breeze, a 60-acre property protected by New Jersey Green Acres, the D&R Greenway Land Trust and the City of Bordentown, is an ecologically important property located at the confluence of the Delaware River and Crosswicks Creek in Bordentown, New Jersey. just south of Trenton. The property's history dates back to the Lenape indigenous people 13,000 years ago and the estate of exiled Spanish King Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte.” She continued, “Whether you're helping lead an educational kayaking experience, taking care of you from tending to a historic community garden to leading a tour of the Discovery Center, each day promises to be a unique community opportunity.”

Nancy Faherty, director of donor and community engagement at D&R Greenway, expressed the great importance of the scholarship, which goes beyond a paid summer job on the river in Bordentown, New Jersey. She emphasized the connection to the Alliance for Watershed Education, a group supported by the William Penn Foundation. A decade ago, the foundation launched the Delaware River Watershed Initiative (DRWI) to address four major threats to clean water in the river basin: stormwater, agricultural runoff, deforestation and groundwater depletion. “Over the years, the Foundation has worked closely with D&R Greenway because of our alignment with their efforts. The individual selected for this fellowship will become part of a cohort with whom they can continue to work as a future environmental advocate,” said Faherty.
