NCAA relay champion Coby Carrozza returns to Texas for a fifth year

Coby Carrozza announced on Instagram that he will remain in Texas to take advantage of his fifth COVID-19 year through the 2024-2025 season.

Carrozza spent the last four years in Texas. As a freshman, Carrozza won the Big 12 500 freestyle title. He then swam in the NCAA tournament and swam a best time of 1:32.70 in the 200 m freestyle prelims, placing 9th in the prelims. In the final he swam 14th with 1:33.30. He also placed 21st in the 500-meter free and 23rd in the 200-meter dash.

As a sophomore, he defended his Big 12 title and again achieved a personal best of 4:13.31 in the 500 free. He also finished second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 200-meter free run.

At the 2022 NCAAs, he made his second appearance in the NCAA finals in the 200 free when he placed 12th in the 200 free with a personal best of 1:32.56. He also placed 15th in the 500m free with a time of 4:14.45 after swimming a personal best of 4:12.09 in the prelims. Carrozza also received a nod for the Texas 800 free relay. He managed a fast start of 1:31.46, helping the relay team to the NCAA title by nearly two seconds.

After his sophomore year in the summer of 2022, he secured a spot on the U.S. World Championship team. Finishing fifth at the International Team Trials, he secured a relay spot in the men's 4×200 meter free relay. At the 2022 World Championships, he clocked a time of 1:46.22 in the preliminary rounds, setting up the top-seeded U.S. men for the final. The relay won gold in the final.

As a junior, Carrozza reached his first NCAA A final when he finished eighth in the prelims of the 200 free and placed fifth in the final with a swim time of 1:32.06. He also placed 11th in the 500m freestyle and 33rd in the 200m freestyle. He also helped Texas defend its relay title as he had a flying start of 1:30.50.

Last season, Carrozza reached another NCAA A final by placing fifth in the prelims of the 500 free with a personal best time of 4:10.74. In the final he took 7th place. He missed the 200 free final by half a second as he finished 22nd in the preliminary heat. He also changed his event lineup on the final day, opting for the 100 free instead of the 200 fly. He swam again on the team's 800-meter free relay at the NCAAs and placed 3rd on that relay.

Carrozza's best SCY times are:

  • 100 free: 42.83
  • 200 free: 1:31.97
  • 500 free: 4:10.74
  • 200 fly: 1:42.96

Carrozza's return is crucial for Texas as they enter the “Bowman Era” next season. The team placed 7th at the 2024 NCAAs, their lowest finish in Carrozza's four years. The team will look to recover and will welcome the return of David Johnston from his Olympic redshirt. The team also welcomes Hubert Kos, who transfers from Arizona State.
