Field, post positions, scratches – NBC New York

There was a change on the field for the 2024 Kentucky Derby.

Encino dropped out of Saturday's highly anticipated Triple Crown race due to injury.

Coach Brad Cox said Encino didn't look right after a practice session Tuesday morning. Encino was transported to an equine hospital in Lexington, where the stallion was diagnosed with a soft tissue strain in his right front leg.

“He galloped first thing this morning, he looked great. That’s what’s so confusing,” Cox told Daily Racing Form. “He was out and about just as much this morning as he was last week before his breeze happened.”

Encino, who had morning odds of 20-1, was expected to start the race from the No. 9 position. But after the scratch, a new horse entered the field.
