PENNSYLVANIA – Keystone State teacher salaries are among the highest average teacher salaries in the U.S., according to the National Education Association's 2024 Educator Pay in America report.

The average starting salary for a teacher in the state is $49,083, ranking 12th in the nation for starting salary (the national average starting salary for a teacher is $44,530).

That's less than the federal minimum wage of $57,664, which is “the income required for a family of one adult and one child to maintain a modest but adequate standard of living in the most affordable metropolitan area,” the report said .

California teachers earn the most in the nation, taking home an average of $95,160 each year. Teachers in Florida earn the least, on average, at $53,098 per year.

According to the report, the pay gap between Pennsylvania teachers compared to other college graduates with similar experience is 84 cents.

Overall, teacher salaries have not kept pace with inflation despite record increases in some states, the NEA said. Teachers earn 5 percent less than they did 10 years ago.

“Low wages limit the ability to attract and retain qualified educators to the profession due to a looming educator shortage and declining educator morale, primarily due to low wages and poor working conditions,” the association said.
