Softball concludes the regular season with host North Texas

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte softball team will complete the 2024 regular season by hosting North Texas for three games at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium this weekend. Due to a schedule change, the series will begin Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The start day and time for game three have not yet been determined.

Fans are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes early for the Senior Day ceremony prior to Friday's opening game.

Charlotte continued its winning streak over the weekend with a win against UAB. The Niners outscored the Blazers 16-2 in the three games and received a complete game shutout from RHP Georgeanna Barefoot in the opening game on Friday. Barefoot allowed just three hits and no walks, fanning out three. RHP Sam Gress was lights out and allowed one run over nine innings as she picked up the win in games two and three.

Freshman OF Olivia Williams hit her first career home run – an inside-the-parker in the fifth inning of Friday's contest – during INF Ella Chancey knocked in eight runs.

With their win over UAB, the Niners have now won 11 games in a row, tying the program's longest winning streak since 2016. The school record for consecutive wins is 13, set in 2006.

Due to her dominant performance, Chancey was named American Conference Player of the Week for the third time this year. The junior hit 6 of 14 with two home runs and eight RBI in four games, including a game-winning two-run home run in the seventh inning of Charlotte's 4-1 comeback win over UAB on Sunday.

In conference play, Chancey ranks first in hits (32), second in AVG (.432), fifth in SLG (.716) and has 25 RBI in 24 games.

Charlotte has a chance to secure first place in the American Athletic Conference Tournament next week. To achieve victory, the Niners must win at least two games against North Texas AND finish at least one game better than Florida Atlantic, with whom they are currently tied for first place. FAU has a three-game series against Tulsa. To secure the runner-up spot, the Niners must win the series against North Texas OR finish at least one game better than FAU. The two highest seeds in the tournament receive a bye into the semifinals.

Gress has allowed just one earned run in her last 25.2 innings, a streak that dates back to April 14 against UTSA.

The Niners pitching staff leads The American in fewest HBP (19). In conference play, they have the best ERA (2.09) and the fewest walks (55).

Charlotte's offense needed just nine walks to set the program record for most bases on balls in a season. The record is 206, set by last year's NCAA regional team.

Explore the middle green
North Texas enters the weekend at 30-20 overall and 17-7 at The American, having won five of its last six games. INF Makalya Smith is the team's leading hitter, batting .304 with 10 home runs and 29 RBI. RHP Mackenzie Waggoner leads the pitching staff with a 2.49 ERA and a 12-5 record in 31 appearances. As a team, the Mean Green have posted 13 shutouts, the most in The American and 15th nationally.

Charlotte holds a slight 8-7 edge in the all-time series, although the Mean Green have had the best Niners of late, winning four of the last five contests.

Before the first game, Charlotte will honor six seniors playing their final games at The Sue: Kiyah Garrett, Cori Hoffler, Leah Powell, Ashleigh Washington, Makalah MitchellAnd Georgeanna Barefoot.
