Georgia hosts Mississippi State softball

STARKVILLE – No. 19 Mississippi State has a lot to live up to this weekend.

Beyond the off-field celebrations (Bark in the Part on Friday and Senior Day on Saturday), the three-game series against No. 12 Georgia in Starkville has major implications for MSU's postseason plans.

The SEC Tournament is scheduled to begin May 7 in Auburn, Alabama, with seeds 12 and 13 opening the tournament. If the tournament began this week, MSU would be the No. 8 seed and would face No. 9 seed Alabama. But MSU still has time to secure a higher seed in the SEC Tournament.

MSU could be a No. 4 seed in the SEC tournament, but needs help to get there. To start, MSU would have to beat Georgia, then No. 11 seed Ole Miss would have to beat Arkansas and South Carolina to win two games against Missouri.

The top four finishers in the SEC Tournament will receive two byes and will not play until next Thursday, May 9th. Seeds 5 through 11 and the winner of game No. 12 and No. 13 will play on Wednesday.
