“Michigan State Football picks up Illinois OL transfer Andrew Dennis.”

Andrew “AJ” Dennis didn’t leave home for long.

The former Michigan State football commit and Free Press Dream Team member will indeed be part of the Spartans' 2024 class after announcing his plans to transfer from Illinois via X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday night.

Dennis originally committed under former MSU coach Mel Tucker on April 8, 2023, then reneged on his pledge on Oct. 16 after Tucker was fired. The Mount Pleasant native enrolled early at Illinois and went through spring training for coach Bret Bielema in Champaign, but the center back entered the transfer portal on Monday.

LEAVING EAST LANSING: Former Michigan State OL Ethan Boyd has committed to play for Colorado forward Deion Sanders

The 6-foot, 290-pound Dennis was a four-star recruit who originally chose MSU over 24 other Division I offers, including Illinois, Minnesota, Baylor, Boston College, Cincinnati and Missouri before resuming his recruitment and signing with the Illini. He was ranked as the No. 14 interior offensive player in the country and the No. 264 player overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings in the 2024 class, earned Division 3-4 First Team All State honors from the Associated Press and also played last on defense Fall at Mount Pleasant High.

Dennis' pending transfer comes hours after the Spartans lost to Ethan Boyd, an East Lansing High School graduate who announced he plans to play in Colorado in the fall.
