Illinois Peace Officer Memorial sculpture unveiled in Springfield

Family members and leaders gathered Thursday at the Illinois Police Officer Memorial Sculpture in the state capitol.

The service included a tribute to Chicago officers Andres Vasquez Lasso and Areanah Preston, who both lost their lives in the line of duty in 2023.

Four other officials were also honored at the event.

Police officers from across the state attended, as well as deputies and families of those who died in the line of duty.

Names to be added this year include officials from Cicero, Montgomery County and Sangamon County.

Gov. JB Pritzker spoke about the legacy of these officers and what their memory will mean to their communities.

“To the families, friends and loved ones of those who were taken from us far too soon, we owe you not only our condolences, but also your support. “We dedicate this memorial with a promise to honor the memories of those you loved and lost, and through our actions, carry on their legacy of service,” Pritzker said.

The monument where the ceremony took place bears the names of the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. The company was first founded in 1987.
