Florida State NCAA qualifier Yordan Yanchev returns for fifth season

2024 NCAA Qualifiers Jordan Yanchev from Florida State announced on Instagram that he would be returning for a fifth year.

As a freshman, Yanchev helped lead the team in the ACC with 34 individual points. He was highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 500 free. He received an invite to the 2021 NCAAs, swimming in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle prelims. He placed 23rd in the 500-meter dash with a time of 4:15.85 and placed 37th in the 200-meter dash and 50th in the 100-meter dash.

In his sophomore season, he won the B final of the 500 free at ACCs in a personal best of 4:14.16. He then swam individually at NCAAs, placing 29th in the 500m and 46th in the 200m. He also led the team's 800 free relay with a personal best of 1:34.95.

He made great strides as a junior, leading the team with 63 individual points at the 2023 ACCs. There he placed 3rd in the 500-meter free, 8th in the 1650 free with an event change, and 13th in the 200 free. He also swam personal best times in all three disciplines. At the 2023 NCAAs, he swam a personal best of 14:56.18 in the 1650 free, placing 25th. He also placed 40th in the 200 free and 45th in the 500 free.

He scored 38 individual points at the ACCs last season and then swam at the 2024 NCAAs. At NCAAs, he placed 39th in the 200 free and 36th in the 500 free. He was one of four individual NCAA qualifiers for the team last season, which finished 21st with 34 points.

Yanchev's best times are:

  • 100 free: 44.18
  • 200 free: 1:33.77
  • 500 free: 4:12.97
  • 1650 free: 14:56.18

Yanchev's return is crucial, especially since the team only had four individual NCAA qualifiers and one of them was a graduate student Peter Vajarsi which means he won't return. Vajarsi was the team's only individual scorer with four points. Yanchev wasn't the only senior either Mason Herbet also finished his senior season at the NCAAs.

Yanchev competes for Bulgaria at international level. In February, just before the ACCs, he competed at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, placing 41st in the 200m freestyle and dual relay swimming.
