Get ready to celebrate pop culture at the Idaho Falls Retro X2 event

IDAHO FALLS – Idaho Falls Retro X returns for a second year to celebrate pop culture.

The two-day, family-friendly, Comic-Con-style event will be held May 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Idaho Falls Elks Lodge #1087, 640 E. Elva Street. More than 70 vendors will sell vintage and retro collectibles, toys, comics, video games and more.

“We represented all kinds of fandoms,” said Phillip Langston, co-creator of Retro X with Brandon Kimball.

Items for sale range from toys from the '80s – including “Star Wars”, “Transformers”, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, “Masters of the Universe” and “GI Joe” – to more modern toys such as “Marvel Legends,” “Funko Pop! and plush toys. Some vendors will sell vintage video games, Nintendo and SEGA consoles and accessories, as well as modern gaming systems.

There will be 3D printed items, leatherwork, whimsical crafts, crocheted stuffed animals, sports and non-sports trading cards, LEGO, die-cast cars and a wide range of anime collectibles.

“Last year we had an eight-hour show that was about grassroots marketing. We literally had four months to put it together. We ended up with 2,300 people,” Langston said of the event, which was initially held at the Idaho Falls Rec Center. “It was full.”

This year, the convention will be held in a new location and welcome two prominent guests who have never been to Eastern Idaho – Kathy Garver and Stephanie Nadolny.

Langston said Garver has been in the film industry since she was a child and people at the event know her best as the voice of Firestar in “Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.” Nadolny voiced Goku and Gohan as well as other characters for the Dragon Ball Z television series, video game and films.

“(Nadolny) was voted into the top 10 best anime guests because she also sings. So she goes on stage and sings anime songs, and that gets people excited,” Langston said. “She will bring a lot of energy.”

Jeff Cox, illustrator of “Garbage Pail Kids,” will also be at the convention.

“He’s a really great artist,” Langston said. “He'll be there signing Garbage Pail Kids stuff.”

The event will feature a tattoo artist, discussion room, the 501st Legion “Star Wars” costume group, characters from Storybook Parties Idaho and food vendors.

There will also be a cosplay contest giving away over $2,000 in cash and prizes. Those interested in participating in the cosplay contest are asked to register for the contest online. Three professional cosplayers from the region will serve as judges for the competition.

“I hope (people) have a really good time and learn that there are all kinds of things out there to enjoy,” Langston said.

He hopes the community will continue to support this event as they want to attract a bigger celebrity next year but can only do so if they have the support of the community.

Tickets for the event are $10 per person (children under 10 are free) or $20 per day for a family ticket. Get $2 off your ticket when you bring a can of food to donate to the Idaho Falls Community Food Basket. Tickets can also be purchased online here.
