Baseball Falls at UMBC on Thursday afternoon

Baltimore, MD – The University of Maine baseball team was defeated by UMBC on Thursday afternoon.

First Pitch: 3:00 p.m. (7-1 UMBC)

First Inning: UMBC got on first with a sac fly to left field in the opening frame.

Fourth inning: UMBC scored four runs in the frame. Marshall Smaracko was asked to record the final out of the fourth inning. Krieger allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits, 4 walks and 2 strikeouts in his 3½ innings.

Fifth inning: Owen Wheeler began the fifth inning on the mound for Maine.

Smaracko got the only batter he faced when he pitched a scoreless third of an inning.

UMBC put up a run in the frame on a single to center field.

Sixth Inning: UMBC scored its seventh run of the day on a fielder's choice play.

Seventh inning: Jeremiah Jenkins gave the Black Bears their only run of the day on a single pitch to right, scoring Jack friend (BB).

Blaine Cockburn began the bottom of the frame on the hill for Maine. Wheeler allowed 2 runs on 1 hit, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in 2 innings in relief.

Cockburn allowed no runs on 2 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in his 2 innings.

Maine (10-30, 6-9 AE) is back in action for the second game of the series on Friday, May 3 against UMBC. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
