Van Buren is working with Philadelphia College on a historical art project

VAN BUREN, Maine — What started as a professor's Google search led to a collaboration between a university in Philadelphia and a border town more than 700 miles away in northern Maine.

Last year, the town of Van Buren was selected as one of 17 communities in the country for a Citizens Institute on Rural Design grant. The grant has no monetary value but still creates unique opportunities, including the city's collaboration with Drexel University's Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.

The 10-week project involves the creation of 10 to 12 works of art that will be placed on granite posts along the city's historic trail. The trail connects the city parks and boat launch and runs along the St. John River and Violette Stream.
