TRANSCRIPT:

The search for a new home for some veterans in Taylor County continues. They've discovered how this has affected their reach, which is why they're turning to the community for help.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9225 is of great importance to the veterans here

“It’s everything to me, it’s my life,” said Donald Norris, the post’s junior deputy commander.

Creating connection and meaning.

“We understand it, we’ve experienced it,” said Mike Thrift, post commander.

“There's not much I can do, but I can help at the post,” said Gary DuBose, the post's senior vice commander.

Norris, Thrift and DuBose said this has been difficult lately.

They currently do not have a website for their post.

“They don’t have a place to call their own,” Thrift said.

As they look for a new home, Thrift said they are feeling the impact.

“We have lost over half of our members because we don’t have a place for veterinarians to come together and socialize,” Thrift said.

Thrift said he feels pressure to find a new home. He said it not only impacts veterans, but also their community engagement.

“We want to be an integral part of our community again and be there for them,” Thrift said.

But Norris said that's difficult right now.

“We want to do more for the community, but that’s not possible when space is limited,” Norris said.

To help, they are hosting a fundraiser at the Perry Splash Pad soon. This will take place on Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4th from 8am.

Thrift said it is critical for veterans to unload these positions and do so in a judgment-free zone.

“Give these veterans a place to talk,” Thrift said.

That's why he asks the community to help them return.

“Please help us find a new home,” Thrift said.
