Cloudy, cool, occasionally wet over the weekend

The conclusion

Goodbye 80s. With the return of a land breeze, our weather on Friday and weekend will be very different to the summer warmth of earlier in the week. We're talking about clouds, cooler than normal temperatures and scattered rain.

Friday will remain dry, but the temperatures will go nowhere. Rain chances are expected to increase on Saturday, but it will not be a total downpour. Sunday will be the wetter weekend day, with up to an inch of total rainfall and rumbles of thunder.

And then, just as we go back to work next week, temperatures warm back up to the 70s and 80s. Perfect timing, right? However, next week remains unsettled and there is a daily chance of at least some showers and thunderstorms.

Friday

Temperatures will be over 50 degrees Friday morning. Not a bad start – we've been in the 50s every morning this week. The day starts with sunshine and an occasional breeze.

Here's the problem: Thermometers just aren't going to get very far today. An area of high pressure over New England will provide an east-southeast (landward) breeze over New Jersey throughout the day. This brings us back to cool, unsettled weather.

Warm air is so close and yet so far. A land breeze will push clouds and cooler air into New Jersey on Friday and the weekend. (Accuweather)

Afternoon temperatures will likely reach the mid-50s along the coast, while the western edge of New Jersey will likely reach the mid-60s. (I can't call these daytime temperatures “high” as it was probably warmer this morning.)

Skies will change from mostly cloudy to cloudy. But we will remain completely rain-free Friday and Friday night.

Friday night's low temperatures will drop to over 40 degrees – our coolest night since last weekend.

Saturday

Just blah.

Cloudy skies will keep temperatures from rising above 60 degrees on Saturday.

Saturday will be cloudy and cool, but rain drops may be limited late into the day. (Accuweather)

While the day starts off dry, the chance of showers increases from midday into the afternoon. It's not a total bankruptcy. There is no guarantee for this either all New Jersey gets wet. Just keep an eye out for spotty to scattered showers.

Sunday

Sunday will be the wetter day of the weekend.

Rain showers are expected from morning to evening on Sunday. That doesn't mean it will rain all day. Overall it looks pretty wet.

Up to 1 inch of rain is possible across New Jersey this weekend, especially Sunday. (Accuweather)

The most consistent rain is expected to fall early and late on Sunday. If a little instability develops in the atmosphere, rumbling thunder could even occur into Sunday evening and Sunday night. Rainfall totals could be up to an inch in parts of the state – healthy, but not really heavy.

Even if it does turn dry on Sunday, it will be cloudy, cloudy and miserably cool. In most cases, the high temperatures only reach the 50s. (I assume there's an opportunity for 60-something year olds in South Jersey.)

Monday

Just in time for the new work week, a shift to southerly winds will bring warmer air back.

High temperatures will climb back into the lower to mid 70s. This is just above the long-term average from the beginning of May.

Warm air returns next week, pushing temperatures back into the 70s and even 80s in New Jersey. (Accuweather)

Aside from the possibility of showers early and late Monday and mostly cloudy skies, I think we'll get through a comfortable stretch of time. Hopefully you catch some rays of sunshine. It might even feel a little damp.

Tuesday and beyond

The next one remains both warm and restless.

Tuesday will likely look similar to Monday, with mostly cloudy skies and 70 degrees. There is a chance of scattered showers.

The model forecast shows the 80s returning on Wednesday. The increased heat and humidity in the atmosphere increases the chance of thunderstorms late in the day.

I suspect that over Mother's Day weekend a number of cold fronts will disappear and our weather will cool down. I hope that 1.) it doesn't get too cold and 2.) the timing of rain, wind or other bad weather doesn't coincide with another weekend.
