The South Carolina pastor claims his wife Mica Miller committed suicide as the family calls on police to investigate

US News

A South Carolina pastor claimed Saturday that his wife committed suicide – six months after she filed for divorce – as her family called on police to “thoroughly” investigate the sudden death.

According to the local newspaper Robesonian, Mica Miller, 30, was found to have suffered a fatal gunshot to the head at Lumber River State Park in Lumberton, NC.

Miller's husband, John-Paul Miller, is pastor of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He broke the news of her death during a recent service after asking his congregation not to discuss it in church.

“Last night I got a call saying my wife died. It was self-inflicted and it took place in North Carolina, Miller said before sharing the details of her planned memorial service.

“You all pray for me, my children and everyone else. They all knew that she was not doing well mentally and needed medication that was difficult to obtain. I’m sure we will learn more details, but please pray for her family as well.”

Friends of the pastor's late second wife were dismayed by Miller's death and called on officials to look into the matter “in depth.”

“This needs to at least be thoroughly investigated. There has to be some responsibility here,” Kenn Young told WPDE. “Because yes, a tragic life was lost, and it’s not just as simple as a mental health issue.”

Mica Miller's death comes as the Robeson County Sheriff's Office launches an investigation into the April 27 shooting.

“Officials are in the process of gathering information from people in South and North Carolina to investigate how Miller died,” Major Damien McLean told the outlet.

McLean announced that there were no signs that the community was in danger.

“She has struggled with suicide before. Each time we helped her through it and took her to the doctor and we got through it and everything was fine. She even gave a few testimonies here at church that we have on video,” John-Paul said. “She was battling suicide, but God took care of her and brought her through.”

Because the pastor claims he and his wife “talked and talked and talked for hours every night,” Mica Miller filed for divorce from her husband in October 2023, according to court documents viewed by the Post.

The case was dismissed in February, but a few days later John-Paul Miller filed for “separate support and alimony” and requested financial assistance since the couple was still legally married.

In April, Mica Miller also requested “separate support and maintenance.” The hearing was scheduled for June 5.

Miller's family is calling for “#JUSTICEFORMICA” as she “filed for a no-contact order and divorce” days before her death, according to Robesonian.

“We are devastated. Prayers are welcome.”

“There is already a lot of talk, so I want to make it clear. Our sister Mica Miller passed away yesterday. Please don’t listen to false stories about her,” Miller’s sister Savannah said on Facebook. “Mica was a God-fearing, joyful, loving woman who did not deserve the abuse she endured.”

“If you hear about this from anyone other than your family, please question it and contact your siblings or parents. Pray for our family and if you have any information that needs to be shared, please contact one of us. Please respect us during this time and honor her memory with the joy that she is no longer suffering. #justiceformica”

Miller was considered “energetic and adventurous,” and she met her husband in 2009 and the two married in 2017, her obituary said.
