Video shows tornado in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, after warning issued in Schuylkill County

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Video shows a tornado in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, as severe weather moved across the state on Monday, prompting multiple tornado warningsWarnings were issued Monday for part of Schuylkill County and Lancaster County, about 50 miles south.

Officials at the National Weather Service's State College office confirmed that an EF-1 tornado with winds up to 90 mph touched down in Mahanoy City, a town in Schuylkill County about 40 minutes south of Wilkes-Barre, after assessing storm damage Tuesday.

A video by Cheryl Breznik, taken at a Redner gas station in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, shows the tornado to the east, where Mahanoy is located.

Schools in the Mahanoy Area School District remained closed Tuesday, and preliminary storm damage reports from the NWS said the roof of Mahanoy High School was damaged and several trees were downed in the area.

There were no reports of injuries related to the tornado.

Then, just before 8:30 p.m., the National Weather Service in Rothville, Lancaster County, issued a tornado warning after radar equipment observed the rotation of a severe thunderstorm over the area. The warning extended to cities including Akron, Ephrata, Leola and New Holland.

Residents of Lititz, Pennsylvania, posted images of a funnel cloud on social media.

The National Weather Service had not announced plans to conduct a damage assessment in Lancaster County.


According to the NWS, a tornado warning is in effect in northeast Schuylkill County in central Pennsylvania
