Increase in passenger numbers in North Dakota and Bismarck in April

The number of passengers at North Dakota's major airports increased by 8 percent overall in April compared to the previous year, with most airports reporting double-digit increases.

According to the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission, air travel in Bismarck, Williston, Dickinson, Minot, Fargo, Grand Forks, Devils Lake and Jamestown totaled 94,112 during the month, up from 87,223 in April 2023.

Passenger traffic increased year-over-year at all airports except Grand Forks, which saw a decrease of 8.2%. Bismarck saw passenger traffic increase by 15.2%, Williston by 18.3% and Dickinson by 20.3%. Additional increases were seen in Fargo (4.5%), Minot (10%), Devils Lake (14.6%) and Jamestown (18%).

Fargo and Devils Lake airports set new records in April with 41,466 and 635 passengers, respectively. The previous April record for both airports was set last year.

Statewide placements are at 388,452 year-to-date, up 5.7% from the same time in 2023. In Bismarck, placements increased 10.5%, in Dickinson 11.1%, and in Williston 29%.

Jamestown Regional Airport's main runway was closed in early May and will remain closed until mid-June for pavement repairs.

“There will be no commercial flights during this period and passenger numbers in May and June will reflect the impact of this closure,” the Commission said.

The airport's crosswind runway will remain open to general aviation during the project period.

Average aircraft utilization across the state was 78% in April. There were 1,439 departures and three cancellations, for a cancellation rate of 0.2%.

Delta Air Lines had the largest market share in North Dakota this month with 39%, followed by United with 27% and Allegiant with 21%. American had 11% and Frontier had 3%. Percentages are rounded to a total of 101%.

Travelers can fly nonstop from Bismarck to Minneapolis, Denver, Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Orlando and Tampa Bay. Flights to Tampa Bay began in mid-May.
