Eleanor O'Connell, 92, of Stratford, passed away on May 25, 2024. Eleanor was born on March 20, 1932 at St. Vincent's Medical Center. She is predeceased by her parents John and Dorothy O'Connell, her sister Dorothy Ann and her brother Edward O'Connell. She is survived by her brothers Jack O'Connell (Stratford) and James O'Connell (Oxford), 7 nieces and nephews and 21 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Eleanor had lived in Stratford since 1956 and was a member of St. James Church. Eleanor graduated from Lauralton Hall in 1949 and from St. Vincent's School of Nursing in 1952. She was a nurse at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport for 42 years, retiring in 1994. She was the chief of the orthopedic department and was voted one of the “greatest head nurses” in the country by the American Journal of Nurses. Her award called her “an able leader and an exceptionally caring person.”

Eleanor had a remarkable memory, a sharp mind, and was an excellent listener. Eleanor was quiet, generous, loving, and kind, always putting the needs of others before her own. She was very devoted to her faith. Eleanor loved family gatherings and maintained a large circle of friends and former colleagues.

The viewing will take place on Thursday 6th June from 9am to 10am at Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place, Stratford, followed by a funeral mass at St James Church, Stratford at 10.30am. The funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Eleanor may be made to St James Church, Stratford.
