Accident on Route 101 in Candia, NH – NECN

Two vehicles were involved in a serious accident on Route 101 in Candia, New Hampshire, on Saturday afternoon, and one of the drivers had to be hospitalized.

New Hampshire State Police said they were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m. They were initially told the accident was caused by a wrong-way driver on the west side of the road.

However, when officers arrived on scene, they found that a Subaru Impreza was traveling eastbound in the right lane when it changed lanes and collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck pulling a trailer. As a result, both drivers lost control of the vehicle and drove into the central media area, where the pickup truck and trailer overturned.

Both vehicles crossed the wide median and came to a stop next to the expressway shoulder on the west side of Route 101, going in the wrong direction, police said.

Medical personnel at the scene evaluated both drivers – 18-year-old Michael Mallet of Calais, Vermont, in the Subaru and 24-year-old David Dooley of Londonderry, NH, in the Chevrolet – as well as a juvenile passenger in the Subaru.

Mallet and his teenage passenger were released at the scene, police said. Dooley was taken to Elliott Hospital with a minor head injury, police said.

The left lane of Route 101 westbound was closed for approximately 90 minutes while debris was being cleared.

All aspects of the accident remain under investigation. State Police believe there were additional witnesses and ask anyone who has not yet spoken with investigators to contact Trooper Chris Houston at 603-223-4381.
