formerly of Townsend; 89 TOWNSEND – May R. (Ricard) Sigismondo, 89, formerly of Townsend, died Wednesday, October 26, 2011, in Green Spring Village, Springfield, VA.

Her husband, Daniel A. Sigismondo, died on September 6, 1978.

Born October 7, 1922 in Nashua, NH, one of seven children of Leo and Bernadette (Boucher) Ricard, Ms. Sigismondo lived in Townsend for over 46 years before moving to Virginia in 1999.

She worked as a receptionist for the New England Business Service in Groton for 23 years, retiring in 1989. Previously, she worked as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone Company in the Townsend, Fitchburg and Nashua, New Hampshire offices.

During World War II, she served her country in the United States Navy. She was a communicant at St. John's Church in Townsend and was very active with the Townsend Senior Citizens.

Ms. Sigismondo was a member of the Red Hat Society, Women in Military Service (WIMS), and the AT&T Bell Telephone Pioneers.

She is survived by her son, Daniel J. Sigismondo of Taunton; her daughter, Jane Gumkowski of Springfield, VA; a brother, Roland Ricard of Nashua, NH; four sisters, Beatrice Gilker of Florida; Lilliamn LaFrance and Doris Kashulinas, both of New Hampshire; and Jean Canty of Medfield. She also leaves behind three grandchildren, Sarah Gumkowski, Laura Gumkowski and Rachel Gumkowski.

She was the sister of the late Irene Tessier of New Hampshire.

SIGISMONDO — A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011, at St. John's Church, 1 School Street, Townsend. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Townsend. Mrs. Sigismondo's family will receive relatives and friends from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, November 5, at TJ Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main Street, (Rte 119) Townsend Center.
