Newton's Veronica Burton signs with Connecticut Sun after being cut by Dallas Wings

The Connecticut Sun announced Wednesday that they signed Veronica Burton, who grew up in Newton and attended Newton South High School, to a contract that runs through the end of the WNBA season.

The guard was the seventh pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft and played for the Dallas Wings in 2022 and 2023, averaging 2.5 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. The Wings waived Burton on May 12, prior to the start of this season.

Burton was a two-time Globe All-Scholastic Super Team selection at Newton South before she established herself as one of the nation's premier defensive players in college. In four years at Northwestern, Burton picked up three Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors and the 2022 Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Defensive Player of the Year Award.

“She brings essential backcourt depth and an ability to defend and play the Connecticut Sun style of basketball,” Sun general manager Darius Taylor said in a statement.

The Sun are undefeated through nine games this season, and Connecticut leads the league in net rating (14.3) and defensive rating (88.1).

Burton is the daughter of Steve Burton, the sports director for WBZ. Her sister, Kayla, is a reporter at ESPN. Her grandfather, Ron, played running back for the Boston Patriots from 1960-65.
