A yes vote on Amendment 3 is a vote to protect our individual freedom

I proudly served my country in the Vietnam War and have continued my service protecting Americans as a Florida police officer and as a Florida Supreme Court Marshall. During my years as a law enforcement officer, I saw that the War on Drugs, especially when it came to marijuana, was a tremendous waste of scarce public funds. When people are arrested, incarcerated, or otherwise deprived of their freedom simply for possessing small amounts of marijuana, it not only fails to make our streets safer, it ruins people's lives – sometimes for decades, if not longer.

Legalizing adult-use marijuana in Florida would help our police better focus on real crimes – those that pose a real threat to public safety, like violent crime and serious drug trafficking. Instead of chasing people down for a joint, officers could use their time and resources on things that really matter. That would make our communities safer and police work more effective.

Safe, legal and well-regulated marijuana not only means safer streets, but also safer products and less illegal activity in unregulated markets. It also means we can generate a lot of tax revenue that can go toward public services like education and public safety – including law enforcement – while reducing the tax burden on this useless assault on a substance that is less harmful than alcohol.

And let's not forget our nation's veterans. Many of us suffer from PTSD and chronic pain. Legal marijuana offers a safer, more effective alternative to addictive painkillers. If we make it harder for veterans to access safe alternatives to opioids, we risk losing even more of our heroes to addiction and overdose.

Although recreational marijuana use is criminalized in Florida, more than half of Americans currently live in states where they can safely and legally use marijuana. I don't believe that we in Florida should live with more restrictions than others, as we deserve the same freedoms as they do.

As a veteran, I firmly believe in protecting my family and other American families from dangerous criminals, but I also believe that government should play as little a role in our lives as possible. Given the proven public safety benefits of legalizing marijuana – including reducing drunk driving incidents, providing greater resources for serious crime prevention, and ensuring access to marijuana without dangerous substances – the state's current marijuana laws harm Floridians and restrict their individual freedom.

And now it matters: A new study by the (conservative) American Medical Association has found that states that allow the legal use of marijuana for adults have an actual reduce in use among teenagers. That alone should be a motivation to vote “yes” on Amendment 3!

In November, we have the opportunity to roll back the unfair and unproductive criminalization of marijuana by voting yes on Amendment 3. This will allow law enforcement to better focus on protecting their citizens by targeting serious crimes and requiring safe use regulations, including requiring that marijuana be consumed only by responsible adults in the home.

Freedom is a core American value that I have fought hard to protect. It's time we made it clear to our government that its role in our lives is to support our freedom, not hinder it.
