Former Texas WR Xavier Worthy signs rookie contract with the Chiefs

Although he was only selected as the No. 28 overall pick, former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Xavier Worthy may have been the luckiest player selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Of course, everyone wants to be in the top 10 and make as much money as possible, but landing on the Kansas City Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid far surpasses that.

Worthy spent just three years in Austin before turning pro, but he has been a key part of the offense since his freshman year on campus. He was named the 2021 Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and was twice selected to the All-Conference first team. In 39 career games with Texas, Worthy had 197 receptions for 2,755 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Despite winning two consecutive Super Bowls, the Chiefs have struggled to find success at the receiver position since trading Tyreek Hill. Worthy will be compared to Hill because of his game-winning speed, and it will be interesting to see how he is utilized in the Kansas City offense.

After winning the Super Bowl, the Chiefs were expected to draft No. 32 overall. In one of the most surprising moves of the draft, Kansas City traded with the Buffalo Bills to move up to No. 28. They selected Worthy, even though the Bills were also in desperate need of pass catchers.

More than two months have passed since the draft ended, but the Chiefs and the NFL record holder in the 40-yard dash have officially agreed to a four-year contract worth nearly $13.8 million.
