Hurley will make a decision next Monday

All was quiet in Storrs on Sunday, a typical day off for the UConn men's basketball program, which began a week of summer training.

This decision was marked by uncertainty, as Dan Hurley, who led the program for the past six seasons, was still undecided whether to stay and fight for the Huskies' third consecutive victory or accept the reportedly “huge” contract offer from the NBA's most traditional franchise, the Los Angeles Lakers.

Hurley plans to make a decision about his future on Monday, he told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Sunday night.

He met with his players shortly after Wojnarowski announced the news on Thursday morning that he was a candidate for the Lakers and told them that for now “Everything continues as before.” The team practiced that day and Hurley flew to Los Angeles for a meeting with Lakers officials on Friday, where the sides reportedly “already discussed the contractual parameters” of a possible 100 million US dollars act.

“The Lakers have made a compelling case and presented a compelling vision that he could be the franchise's next coach, but he is excited about what he has built at two-time defending national champion UConn,” Wojnarowski reported. “In a phone interview Sunday, Hurley told ESPN that he was 'extremely impressed' with Lakers vice president and GM Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss and spent Sunday weighing what sources tell ESPN is a massive, long-term offer to move to the NBA.”

Hurley flew back to the Northeast on Saturday morning and was spotted at a Billy Joel concert at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night with his wife Andrea and assistant coach Luke Murray. Murray posted a video from the concert to his Instagram Story, which was reposted and quickly went viral, in which he smiled broadly, waved at Andrea and made a peace sign to Dan — or just the number two, the same pose he has done countless times since winning his second consecutive NCAA championship title in April.

Murray's post was deleted on Sunday – presumably because it had attracted so much attention – before Instagram's stories automatically expire after 24 hours.

UConn Nation sat on hot coals on Sunday morning after According to reports, Hurley would meet with the team that afternoon. But no team meeting was scheduled, UConn sources say.

The Huskies will continue with their regular schedule — “business as usual” — and will reconvene Monday afternoon for practice, which is still scheduled to take place. A team meeting would likely take place beforehand, on Monday morning or possibly even Sunday evening.

According to Wojnarowski, Hurley “was at the heart of the Lakers' search from the beginning,” although he had interviewed other candidates, including two in-person interviews with New Orleans Pelicans assistant coach James Borrego. On Wednesday night – the same night Hurley reportedly told UConn administration he was interested in talking with the Lakers – reports came out that ESPN analyst and 15-year NBA veteran JJ Redick was the favorite for the job.

Hurley, who has spoken openly about his desire to eventually coach in the NBA, signed a six-year, $32.1 million contract extension with UConn after winning the 2023 national championship. The teams have been working on another extension after Hurley's Huskies won two straight games in 2024.

Hurley indicated to local media after appearing at the UConn Coaches Road Show in Stamford on Wednesday night that the process of working out a contract extension is taking longer than expected, even though UConn has reportedly put an offer on the table that would make him one of the three highest-paid college coaches. according to Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68.

The decision will come down to either taking over the coaching job of generational legend LeBron James in Hollywood or returning to a team that is geared up to compete for its third consecutive NCAA title – something that hasn't been accomplished since John Wooden's UCLA teams over 50 years ago.

Now the Huskies fans can only wait.
