Texan woman seriously injured in hot tub incident at Mexican resort

The El Paso woman who was seriously injured after a fatal incident in a hot tub at a Mexican resort hotel is a former teacher in the Ysleta Independent School District.

Lizette Zambrano worked as a teacher at East Pointe Elementary School until 2022, Tracy Garcia-Ramirez, the district's communications director, confirmed to the El Paso Times.

Friends set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical and funeral expenses, and the page raised nearly $36,000 in less than a day.

“Jorge had a heart of gold and was always there for family and friends. The love they shared lasted forever,” the GoFundMe campaign states.

Zambrano and 43-year-old Jorge Guillen were both apparently electrocuted on Tuesday, June 11, while in an outdoor hot tub next to a swimming pool in private condominiums in Puerto Peñasco, the Sonora state Attorney General's Office said in a press release.

Guillen died, while Zambrano was taken to a US hospital in critical condition.

GoFundMe page co-organizer Sylvia Annette Sundermann said she is currently with Zambrano's family in Phoenix, awaiting news on her condition.

The two were wonderful people, said Sundermann.

Although the Attorney General's Office of the State of Sonora spoke of a power outage, the cause of Guillen's death has not yet been officially determined.

Jorge Guillen was a student at Western Technical College

Western Technical College released the following about Guillen on Thursday morning: “In times of tragedy, our community stands together. We are as saddened as the rest of the world by the passing of our beloved student, Jorge Guillen. The news reached us last night through one of Jorge's classmates. While we are trying to contact his family, it is critical to provide assistance as quickly as possible.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the family of his wife Lizzette Zambrano, whose condition remains critical. Please consider contributing to the GoFundMe to help cover their increasing expenses. Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated.”

Where is Puerto Peñasco?

This beach town, also called Rocky Point, is a popular destination for US tourists. It is located on the Gulf of California (also known as the Gulf of California) near the Arizona border.

How common are electric shocks in swimming pools or hot tubs?

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were 33 injuries and 33 deaths from electrocution in swimming pools and hot tubs in the United States between 2002 and 2018.

Hot tub electrocutions are rare, but can occur due to faulty wiring, improper installation, or the presence of electrical equipment near the water. Specific statistics on the frequency of hot tub electrocutions are not often published, but they are considered rare events.

To minimize risk, it is important to ensure that hot tubs are installed and maintained according to safety guidelines, including using residual current devices, conducting regular inspections, and avoiding the use of electrical appliances near the hot tub.
