Reactions to the controversial College World Series game

Florida State lost its opening game of the College World Series to No. 1 seed Tennessee in controversial fashion on Friday, allowing four runs in the ninth inning and giving the Vols a 12-11 victory.

Although the Seminoles allowed Tennessee to get back into the game after entering the inning with an 11-8 lead, a controversial no-swing call by the third base umpire became the biggest talking point – and controversy – of the game.

It was Vols first baseman Blake Burke who not only provided the potential final out in FSU's upset victory, but also the Vols' decisive run. With the Seminoles leading 11-9, Burke was tied 2-2 with runners on second and third base. Pitcher Brennen Oxford threw a slow pitch to get Burke to swing, which he apparently did.

However, the strike never came. An appeal of the check swing to the umpire at third base resulted in a no-swing, giving Burke a full count.

After fouling off the next pitch, Burke hit a single behind Oxford's head and scored Cannon Peebles and Christian Moore, tying the game. Billy Amick hit a single in his at-bat, moving Burke to second base. Then Dylan Dreiling hit the walk-off single that scored Burke and gave Tennessee the win.

Given the end of the game and the high-profile importance of the College World Series, fans and neutral observers alike commented on the check swing and the chaos that followed. Here is a sampling of some of the more notable reactions to FSU's loss to Tennessee:
