FSU's Link Jarrett on Blake Burke's check swing: “Every pitch counts”

The opening game of the College World Series between Florida State baseball team and No. 1 national seed Tennessee ended in heartbreak – and controversy – on Friday.

The Seminoles, who enter the game as the No. 8 seed nationally, took an 11-8 lead into the ninth, but allowed a Tennessee team that held on all game to score four runs to take the 12-11 victory. The third and fourth runs of the inning – the tying run and the walk-off run, respectively – came on the heels of a controversial call that many FSU fans felt unfairly affected the game.

The problem was Vols first baseman Blake Burke, who had a 2-2 count with runners on second and third base. A strike would have been the last out of the inning, giving FSU an 11-9 victory and putting them in the winner's bracket. In fact, an off-speed pitch from Brennan Oxford seemed to get Burke swinging, but an appeal of the check swing to the third base umpire resulted in a ball that went for a full count.

Two pitches later, Burke hit a two-RBI single behind Oxford's head to tie the game at 11-11. Two batters later, Dylan Dreiling hit a single of his own to score Burke and tie the game in favor of the Vols, prompting a largely negative reaction on social media.

But FSU baseball coach Link Jarrett, who spoke about the check swing after the game, refused to say whether the game was won or lost because of the ruling — only that every pitch counts. He spoke about the ruling in his opening statement and received no questions about the decision from the assembled reporters.

“You saw the game. I have to rewatch every throw of that game. There are factors that affect the outcome of the game,” Jarrett said. “And I can't tell from 90 feet off the side what was going on in some of the things that happened. I have to watch the game. You saw it.”

Jarrett added:

“In these games, every pitch counts. And you saw the result. Every pitch. We didn't play well enough to pull away. It was ugly at the beginning. We had chances to get outs, but we didn't. It wasn't always clear enough on the mount. I thought (Conner) Whittaker pitched great, I thought Jamie (Arnold) struggled. But they (Tennessee) delivered the result.”
