Euro 2024: Georgia makes its debut at major tournament against Turkey in Group F

DORTMUND, Germany — Georgia will make its debut at a major soccer tournament when the South Caucasus country of 3.7 million people plays Turkey in Group F at the European Championships. The other teams in the group are Portugal and the Czech Republic. Kick-off is at 6 p.m. local time (16:00 GMT) in Dortmund. Here's everything you need to know about the match:

— Georgia is the only debutant at Euro 2024, but still has some experience of the tournament. Three Georgian players were on the Soviet Union team that won the inaugural title in 1960.

— The country celebrated the national team’s first appearance on the big stage by issuing commemorative postage stamps and special coins for the occasion.

– Georgia is expected to rely heavily on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the team's undisputed superstar after his heroics for Napoli over the past two seasons – including winning the MVP award in the 2022-23 Serie A title season.

— Turkey were heavily tipped as underdogs at the last European Championship, losing all three group matches and scoring just one goal. This time, the national team went rather unnoticed despite topping a qualifying group with Croatia.

— Former Italian striker Vincenzo Montella is Turkey's coach by chance, having taken the post in September 2023 after spending the previous two years in Turkish club football as coach of Adana Demirspor.

— Arda Guler, a 19-year-old playmaker for Real Madrid, will be the beating heart of the Turkish team for the first time at a major tournament – and he is expected to be the star of the national team for many years to come. İrfan Can Kahveci and Cenk Tosun trained separately ahead of the match, while defender Ozan Kabak is out of the tournament after tearing a cruciate ligament in the warm-up matches.

— Georgia coach Willy Sagnol has worked with “almost all” of his players at a training camp in Austria before the team leaves for Germany, the country's football association said. No specific injuries were disclosed.

– Georgia has one squad member who plays in the United States: Atlanta United winger Saba Lobhanidze.

— A moped rider travelled 4,000 kilometres (about 2,500 miles) in 12 days to deliver a Georgian flag filled with messages of support from people back home to the team at their training base in Germany on Saturday.

— The 23-year-old Kvaratskhelia has scored 15 goals in 30 games for Georgia.

— Turkey have not won any of their last five matches, most recently a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their warm-up match for Euro 2024.

— “We all have to try to create another miracle and reward our support with even more beautiful days.” — Georgia midfielder Nika Kvekveskiri.

— “Euro 2020 was disappointing for us. We were a young team then and we still are. We are well prepared for this tournament… I think we are ready for this tournament.” — Turkish defender Merih Demiral.
