Results of the runoff elections in Southeast Georgia

GEORGIA (WTXL) – In addition to the Republican runoff in Georgia's 2nd Congressional District and the races for the school board and county commissioner seats in Lowndes County, there were several other runoff elections in our area.

On Tuesday night, J. Gregory Howard secured the Republican nomination for the 7th Senate District, receiving 61.59% of the vote to Fred Clayton's 38.41%. The 7th Senate District includes Berrien County. The winner will face Democratic incumbent Nabilah Islam Parkes in November.

In Echols County, Justin Staten won the Republican nomination for County Commission District 2, Post 1. In all-voting, Staten received 72 percent of the vote to Freddy Permenter's 27 percent. Since there is no Democratic candidate for the office, Staten will assume the post.

Grady County Republicans chose their candidate for Precinct 1 Committee. In what was arguably the closest race of the night for our region, Yancey Maxwell defeated Richard Jordan 52.23% to 47.77%. This reverses the May primary election, in which Jordan received 44% of the vote and Maxwell received 38%. Current incumbent June Knight received just 18% of the vote in May. Maxwell will fill the seat since no Democrat is in the race.

Thomas County voters also participated in a runoff election for Chief Magistrate, with Matthew Shiner winning (52.85%) over incumbent Andrew Seery (47.15%). There are no Democratic challengers.
