The celebrated actor Donald Sutherland, famous for his roles in “M*A*S*H,” “Ordinary Family” and “The Hunger Games” as well as in over 200 television series and films, died on Thursday in Miami. He was 88 years old.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that my father Donald Sutherland has passed away,” his son, fellow actor Kiefer Sutherland, posted on Instagram. “Personally, I consider him to be one of the most important actors in film history.”

“He was never discouraged by a role, whether it was good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved and you can never ask for more than that. A fulfilling life,” he said.

The Canadian actor has played a variety of roles during his long and productive career, including the quick-witted Dr. Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H, a detective in Klute opposite Jane Fonda, a podman in the 1978 horror remake of The Body Snatchers, a convicted felon in The Dirty Dozen, a pyromaniac in Backdraft opposite Ron Howard, a supervisor of a vampire hunter in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, an 18th century Venetian explorer in Fellini's Casanova in 1976 with director Frederico Fellini, a pot-smoking professor in I Think I'm Kicked by a Horse, a grieving father in Ordinary People, a legendary safecracker in the 2003 remake of The Italian Job, and the authoritarian villain President Snow in the Hunger Games series, to name a few.

Director Ron Howard praised Sutherland on Thursday on X (formerly Twitter), calling him “one of the smartest, most interesting and compelling film actors of all time. Incredible range, creative courage and dedication to serving the story and the audience with the highest excellence.”

Amazingly, Sutherland was not even nominated for an Oscar, although he did receive an honorary award in 2017. He won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his work in “Citizen X” and a Golden Globe for “Path to War.”

Sutherland is survived by his wife Francine Racette, his sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus and Kiefer, and his daughter Rachel.
