Commuter Alert: NJ Transit back on track, Amtrak still has some problems Friday morning

NEW YORK (WABC) — New Jersey Transit reported that it was back on schedule or nearly back on schedule Friday morning. Still, Amtrak had to cancel several trains “due to a previous service disruption” and the need to maintain equipment and reposition personnel.

NJ Transit reported that service was back on schedule or nearly on schedule as of midnight. “Train service to and from New York Penn Station is running on schedule or nearly on schedule, with residual delays on trains already in transit due to a previous AMTRAK overhead wire issue at New York Penn Station,” the railroad said.

However, not everything was fine at Amtrak. On Friday morning, Amtrak announced that several trains had been canceled.

The railway company announced that trains Acela 2154 and Acela 2173 as well as trains 111/112/130 and 181 were completely cancelled.

The changes come after a catastrophic day of disruptions and cancellations in rail traffic on the Northeast axis on Thursday.

Due to power problems, NJ Transit and Amtrak service was suspended shortly before 3 p.m. on Thursday.

The cause of the widespread problem was a faulty circuit breaker that led to a power outage on the tracks between New York Penn Station and Newark Union Station.

“I'm so angry and upset,” said commuter Cheryl Gaddsen. “Whether it's hot or cold weather, there's always chaos on the trains.”

According to NJ Transit, an unrelated brush fire in the area hampered repair efforts.

This was the latest in a series of incidents that have negatively impacted commuters. On Tuesday, NJ Transit and Amtrak commuters experienced delays and cancellations due to overhead wire problems in the morning and later a stalled train outside Penn Station.
