Pennsylvania has many livable cities according to the ranking

In a recent ranking of the most livable places in America by the US news magazine US News, Pennsylvania's cities did not make it into the top 10, but the state's cities still rank fourth.

The eight Pennsylvania cities on the list were: Pittsburgh, Lancaster, Scranton, Harrisburg, Allentown, York, Reading and Philadelphia.

While six states did not make the top list of the 150 most livable places in America, three states had more than ten cities each: Florida with 14, California with 14 and Texas with ten cities.

According to US News, the data used to analyze and determine the 150 most populous metropolitan areas came from sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Factors that assess quality of life, such as healthcare, public education, employment prospects, housing costs, growth and even air quality indices, were all evaluated and ranked from best to worst.

Pittsburgh ranked 36th, topping the list of Pennsylvania cities. York pushed Reading to 7th on the state's list, just behind Philadelphia.

York took credit for its nods to history. “Newcomers to York will find remnants of its rich history and industrial heritage dotting the cityscape, from restored colonial buildings to unexpectedly playful public sculptures made from parts of old York machinery,” the report said.

US News pointed residents to Pittsburgh's nearly 2,000 acres of green space in county, regional, state and waterfront parks and proclaimed, “Pittsburgh is on the verge of new heights.”

The report praises Pittsburgh as a home to major companies and as the region's technology and education center. It also praises the increased job opportunities, more affordable housing and improved quality of life brought about by new industries.

Topping the list for 2024-2025 was Naples, Florida, which cited pristine beaches, expansive golf courses, fine dining and shopping, and no state income tax among its many advantages.
