As Pride Month enters its final week, many are reflecting on the most memorable moments of the month, with Florida starting the month off on a high note.

Before the month had even technically begun, on May 31, dozens of people with colorful flashlights lined the pedestrian promenade of Jacksonville's Main Street Bridge to display a rainbow.

The display came after the Florida Department of Transportation declared that all bridges in the state must be lit red, white and blue all summer long in celebration of Governor Ron DeSantis' “Freedom Summer,” so local members of the LGBTQ+ community decided to create their own display.

Whether the bridge lighting was just a celebration of Pride Month or a protest against the state's decision was up to the participants, according to organizers. They told the Florida Times-Union that the turnout was great and pointed out that it was a fun way to show the community that it is still strong.
