What we know so far

As flash flood warnings, flood alerts and flood watches remain in effect for portions of Sioux Falls, Minnehaha and Lincoln Counties, road closures will occur in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area.

A flood warning is in effect for all of southeastern South Dakota until 7:00 a.m. Saturday, and the following areas are currently under a flood watch until 7:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls:

  • Parts of northwest Iowa, including the following counties: Clay, Dickinson, Lyon, O`Brien, Osceola and Sioux
  • Southwest Minnesota, including the following counties, Nobles
  • And southeastern South Dakota, including the following counties: Lincoln, Turner and Union

“In the next 24 hours, additional rainfall of 2.5 to 10 centimeters is possible in the affected area,” says the flood warning. After 5 p.m. on Friday, heavier rainfall and the risk of severe storms are expected.

Places that will experience flooding include: Sioux Falls, Sioux Center, Sheldon, Canton, Sibley, Rock Rapids, Beresford, Parker, Harrisburg, Tea, Rock Valley, Hull, Lennox, Sanborn, George, Centerville, Worthing, Larchwood, Inwood and Viborg.

Here is what we know so far about road closures in the region.

Road closures in Lincoln County:

The Lincoln County Highway Department advises against travel in Lincoln County due to flooding on roads.

Canton

Canton police recommend avoiding these roads and are working to compile a complete list of closed roads.

  • Northern Cedar
  • 4th Street
  • North Lincoln Street
  • 3 to 4 miles north on North Dakota Street
  • NordbrĂĽckenstrasse
  • Noid Street

Highway 18 has reopened, but authorities advise caution.

Tea:

The Tea City Facebook page recommends avoiding Gateway Boulevard when leaving or coming to Tea as the road is only one lane.

West of Canton and south of Worthing:

These roads are closed until further notice due to flooding, according to South Dakota 511, the South Dakota Department of Transportation's road condition information website:

  • South I-29 to SD-11 North
  • US 18 West, Exit 59 to US 18 East, Exit 62
  • 0.25 miles north of SD-44, exit 64 to US 18 West, exit 59

Road closures in Minnehaha County:

According to the Minnehaha County Highway Department, several roads are flooded and conditions are expected to worsen as rain continues.

According to the Minnehaha County Highway Department, County Highway 121 (478th Avenue or Eros Road) south of 252nd Street is closed. The NWS has reported standing water on I-29 south of Sioux Falls.

The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office released photos of the intersection of 478th Avenue and 252nd Street and Hartford Turtle Creek Park, where streets are completely flooded.

Sioux Falls:

According to a post by the City of Sioux Falls on X, these roads are closed:

  • 12th Street is closed from Sertoma Avenue to LaMesa Avenue.
  • Madison Street is closed at LaMesa Avenue
  • Charger Circle south of 69th Street
  • 41st Street at Cliff Avenue near Interstate 229
  • 43rd Street at Louise Avenue

Lennox:

Street barricades will be set up at the corner of Boynton Avenue and Cherry, West 1st and Cleveland, and West 4th and Cleveland. Please be careful, the City of Lennox says on Facebook.

What to do if you encounter closed roads:

“If there are any barriers because the road is closed, don't cross them,” said Tim Masters, a hydrometeorology technician with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls. “The water could be deeper than you think.”
