Phillies' Tommy Henry was crushed in Diamondbacks' 1-12 loss

The Arizona Diamondbacks were mowed down by the Philadelphia Phillies 12-1 on Saturday. Tommy Henry had another dismal outing and Zack Wheeler stopped the Diamondbacks offense as he has done so many times before. It was another hot day at Citizen's Bank Park as the temperature reached 97 degrees.

Henry lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits, including back-to-back home runs by Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm in the third inning. Harper's home run went 427 feet to the halfway point of the second deck. Henry's record is now 2-3 with a 7.04 ERA.

Wheeler pitched perfectly for four innings before allowing his first baserunner in the fifth inning. He hit Christian Walker on the upper arm with a fastball and allowed his first hit to Jake McCarthy. Tucker Barnhart scored a run with a single, making the score 6-1 at that point.

The D-backs, however, never really got into the game. Wheeler threw two more scoreless innings, managed seven innings of two hits and allowed just one run. He managed eight strikeouts.

Scott McGough relieved Henry and allowed four more runs in 2.1 innings, ending any hopes of a D-backs comeback. That included a two-run homer to Nick Castellanos in the fifth inning. Castellanos also hit a two-run single after McGough loaded all the bases in the sixth inning. The Phillies right fielder also hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, giving him five RBIs on the day.

Henry had to fill in for injured starters twice this year. Unfortunately, he was unable to repeat his success from 2023 before his season was ended prematurely due to an elbow injury.

Henry replaced Eduardo Rodriguez, who has yet to throw a pitch for the D-backs this year, and made the Opening Day roster. In six starts in the first month of the season, Henry went 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA and an average of just 4.7 innings per start.

He was reassigned to Triple-A Reno and pitched there throughout May and early June, but was pushed back into the rotation due to injuries to Zac Gallen and Blake Walston. Since his return, he has allowed 11 runs in 10 innings. He has allowed 14 hits, including five home runs, and seven walks.

This could be Henry's last chance for a while. Zac Gallen still won't be back when Henry's turn comes around. But since he has Monday off, the team could skip his spot in the rotation next week. In the meantime, there doesn't seem to be an easy solution to Henry's problems. He just doesn't have the control needed to throw effectively with the stuff he has.

The Diamondbacks fall below .500 with the loss and are now 38-39. They will try to win the series on Sunday with Slade Cecconi starting. The Phillies will start with Cristopher Sanchez. The game will air early Sunday on Roku, starting at 8:35 a.m. MST or 11:35 a.m. EST.

The game will free and not blocked for anyone who wants to see it. If you have an MLB TV or D-backs TV subscription, you can watch as usual. If not, it's very easy to get the free Roku broadcast. You can find more information about that HERE.
