Needles Fire spreads across California and Arizona

PHOENIX (AZFamily) – A new forest fire has spread across the state borders of Arizona and California.

The Needles Fire has burned 203 acres of land on both banks of the Colorado River. It started in California and spread further and further before spilling into Arizona, south of Bullhead City.

As of Saturday evening, the fire on the California side has been stopped at 70 acres and is 50% contained. A house was destroyed in Needles, California.

According to officials, 143 acres (67 hectares) burned near the Mohave Valley in Arizona.

According to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, residents in south and southeast Mohave Valley neighborhoods are currently on evacuation alert. Traffic is only allowed on Courtwright Road. If you plan on driving in the area, please be cautious of emergency vehicles.

According to the Colorado River Sheriff's Department, officers at the Needles Station were called to a fire around 1 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found a brush fire that had engulfed a nearby home. The flames then spread north along the Colorado River.

Officials evacuated the Fenders Resort, a California motel on Needles Highway near the Colorado River. A Colorado River Sheriff's Department rescue helicopter dropped water on the massive fire to assist firefighters.

In an update Sunday morning, all evacuations in California have been lifted and no roads are closed.

San Bernardino County and Mohave Valley fire departments worked through the night to battle the flames and take advantage of the cooler weather. Crews are working to extinguish the flames and establish containment lines.

Authorities are currently investigating what caused the fire.
