Fireworks retailers across Illinois will receive safety and regulatory advice

This advertisement for fireworks appeared in the June 28, 1924 issue of the Pantagraph.


June 24, 1924: State fire officials are going from city to city, urging all fireworks dealers to strictly comply with the law. Shops where large stocks were stored were ordered to immediately remove large quantities of the goods to prevent possible disasters caused by fire or accidental explosion of an explosive. Dynamite torpedoes were removed from shops and their sale was banned because of their dangerous nature.

75 years ago

June 24, 1949: A group of 27 students, four camp assistants, and two teachers from Illinois State Normal University have embarked on a 6,000-mile geography field trip through the eastern United States and Canada. The group departed on a Peoria Charter Coach Company bus because of a strike by Illini Coach Company employees. The field trip participants were to be transported to Terre Haute, Indiana, where they will board a Swallow Coach Lines, Inc. bus of Indiana.

June 24, 1974: Downtown businesspeople were invited to Bloomington City Council tonight to voice their concerns about the delay in opening the new $1.3 million parking garage. Architects and contractors on the project were asked to appear at City Hall to answer questions about the delay. The latest opening date given by city officials is late August. The city had originally planned to open at least part of the parking garage last November.

25 years ago

June 24, 1999: Illinois 9 west of Bloomington is slated to be widened to five lanes under the Illinois Department of Transportation's latest plan, but the widening will not occur until daily traffic counts near Covell Road reach 8,000 vehicles per day. A 1997 traffic count showed that 5,700 vehicles used that stretch of road daily.
