Bannock County official charged with sexual abuse of a minor

The following is a press release from the Bannock County Sheriff's Office.

POCATELLO – On February 28, 2024, the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office received information regarding an allegation of misconduct by one of our officers. Due to the severity of the allegations, the officer was immediately placed on administrative leave.

The deputy's service weapon, his sheriff's badge, and all sheriff's office property were confiscated and he was barred from entering the sheriff's office.

Following the complaints filed against the deputy, the Tri-County Sheriff's Association was contacted to mobilize an investigative team to conduct an independent criminal investigation. Detectives from the Jefferson County and Bingham County Sheriff's Offices, as well as a liaison detective from Bannock County, conducted the investigation.

Additionally, an internal investigation into the employee's conduct has been initiated. Pocatello Police have been asked to lead the investigation with the assistance of a Bannock County liaison detective.

On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the investigation resulted in Trevor Ranere being charged by summons with two counts of sexual abuse of a minor, offenses that carry a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison if convicted.

Ranere was hired as deputy warden in October 2017 and was an assistant patrol officer at the time of the allegations.

Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to call the Bingham County Sheriff's Office at (208) 785-4440.

Bannock County Sheriff Tony Manu announced the charges at a press conference Wednesday and issued the following statement.

As Sheriff, I was very dismayed when we learned of these allegations, and we immediately took every action we could, including placing the deputy on leave and engaging outside, independent investigators to investigate the matter.

We should not lose sight of the courage of the young woman who came forward. It is not easy to report a crime of this nature, especially against a person in a position of power. Her actions are commendable.

This is a sad day for me as Sheriff and for the men and women of this office who serve this community with dedication and honor every day. This incident should not reflect poorly on them and the good work they do.
