How Cody Williams fits into the Utah Jazz’s playing style

Isis Young, Krysten Peek, Lamar Hurd and Tom Haberstroh discuss Utah's decision to select Cody Williams 10th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Video transcript

Well, Cody Williams' dreams came true and he was selected tenth overall by the Utah Jazz.

Interesting fact: Cody Williams is the highest drafted player from Colorado since Chauncey Billups, who we've been talking about since 1997.

So a good choice for the Jazz KP.

I'll start with you here.

I love, I love Cody Williams, the younger brother of Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams.

We were just two tips away from witnessing the brothers reunite.

Will not happen.

He is on his way to Utah.

What I love most about Cody is that he is 19 years old.

He was something of a late bloomer.

In high school, he slowly rose through the ranks.

And that's why I'm convinced that he will cut a great figure in this rebuilt Jazz team.

He reminds me a lot of McDonald's, his defensive versatility due to his length and the way he can defend positions one through four with ease.

And we have to remember that he is 19.

He is much further ahead than his brother at this age.

And Jalen Williams will get a max contract.

OK. Yes, when you look at this 19-year-old guy, he's joining a team that drafted Taylor Hendricks and Kon George last year.

This is a great team.

Those two picks are still 20 years old and then Cody Williams came in transition and spot-ups, he was in the 80th percentile, so top 20% in college basketball in transition and spot-ups.

This is a great pick for the Utah Jazz, who are in a rebuilding and recovery phase.

George and Taylor Hendrix.

They will love playing with it based on everything you describe about it.

It fits with the way jazz already plays and moves.

Last year they finished second in the league in offensive rebound percentage.

Not because they had some great cornerback rebounders.

They didn't have Zack Edie down there, KP.

They didn't have a team down there, but they had a lot of movement in their offense.

Much liquid.

It was difficult to block them because they were moving targets.

He will be able to play that way and also play on the other end.

I like picking.

All right, I like the versatility.

From what we're hearing from this guy, it sounds like Cody Williams got a really good catch on the West Coast.
