Why drivers in Montana's Seeley-Swan district need patience

The Seeley-Swan Corridor may be one of the most popular recreational destinations in Western Montana. But this summer, it could also be one of the most frustrating if you don't plan on some extra travel time.

That's because Montana Department of Transportation contractors are working on major improvement projects throughout the valley, including completing a major reconstruction project and repaved two additional sections to keep the road safe and in good condition.

And July promises to be the month with the greatest impact on the construction industry.

Two renovation projects

The LHC Inc. and Knife River teams are involved in two projects, the Swan Lake Pavement Preservation Project and the completion of the Salmon Lake Highway Reconstruction Project.

The road construction project, which involves adding a “chip sealing” layer to the highway, covers a 7-mile stretch of highway from south of the town of Swan Lake to the Flathead National Forest boundary in the north. Additional work is underway in the valley near Condon, which includes repavement of the road and installation of new signs and guardrails, as well as cutting “rumble strips” to warn drivers and reduce the risk of accidents.

According to MDT, traffic delays of up to 30 minutes are possible as construction is carried out, weather permitting. If you regularly drive through the valley and want the latest information, you can text “SWANLAKE” to 844-764-2126.

The Salmon Lake project continues

Crews are also working to complete the major highway reconstruction along Salmon Lake, south of Seeley. The project began last summer and will involve completely rebuilding the road along the lake.

Work is now entering its final stages, with the highway north of Salmon Lake State Park seeing the most congestion. However, traffic is still one-lane in places and controlled by traffic lights, so if you're heading to the “lakes” for recreation this weekend, through July 4th, or anytime in July, expect delays and slower speeds to ensure the safety of construction workers.

If you are towing a boat, make sure your equipment is tied down securely. You may want to stop and check your trailer after you leave the site.
