Utah Jazz select USC Guard in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft

Former All-Pac-12 freshman point guard Isaiah Collier has tried his luck in the pros after just one year.

Collier was selected by the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night as the number 29 pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft.

The former five-star recruit from Wheeler High School in Georgia had an up-and-down 2023-24 season. In 27 games with the Trojans (15-18), he averaged 16.3 points on .490/.338/.673 shooting, 4.3 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 steals per night. Collier's mediocre jump shot and questions about his playmaking and ball control (he committed 3.3 turnovers per night) — combined with the club's poor record — led to him slipping out of the lottery and landing in the later part of the first round. The upside of such a journey, however, is that Collier now lands with one of the better teams in the league, the Utah Jazz, who have a solid development program.

Collier is a solid defender and a good downhill scorer and finisher at the basket. He should be able to contribute immediately as a useful all-around player off the bench. Collier can shine as both an explosive off-ball scorer and a playmaker. Although he was listed at 6'5″ in college, he was measured at just under 6'3″ at the NBA Draft Combine. His teammates Bronny James and Boogie Ellis could be selected in the second round of the NBA Draft, which is scheduled for Thursday night.

He will be missed at the Galen Center, but joining a solid club full of promising young talent should benefit him in the long run.
