Tuesday night was not ideal for the South Carolina football team's recruiting efforts.

Landon Duckworth, a 4-star quarterback in the class of 2026, has withdrawn his commitment to the program, leaving the Gamecocks without a player at the position in the 1926 cycle.

The Gamecocks also missed out on two players who had announced their college commitments: 4-star cornerback/athlete Brandon Finney and 3-star defensive tackle Eric “EJ” Thomas both announced their commitments, but neither chose to join the South Carolina football program.

Finney, a DMV-area kid who visited Columbia in early June, chose the Oregon Ducks. The Ohio State Buckeyes and Penn State Nittany Lions were two other major players in his recruitment.

Thomas, a big center back from Florida, had narrowed his list down to South Carolina and Syracuse, but decided to commit to Syracuse despite a recent visit to Columbia.

However, the loss of Finney and Thomas does not mean that there are still reserves in the Gamecocks' 2025 recruiting class.

The Gamecocks have signed 4-star cornerback Shamari Earls to the class (though some recruiting heavyweights are pushing hard for him to decommit), and defensive backs Damarcus Leach (4-star safety) and Chris Hatfield (3-star cornerback/safety) are also in the mix. 3-star athlete Jaquel Holman could also play safety at the next level if he doesn't play linebacker. At defensive tackle, athletic lineman Caleb Williams (listed as a 4-star defensive lineman) is the only commitment at that position in the class so far, but Carolina has more players on the defensive front.

A long list of players hoping to recruit for the South Carolina football team are scheduled to announce their decisions this summer. By the start of the season, the majority of the high school class could already be set, as the Gamecocks could have more than 20 class commitments by the time the season opens on August 31, when Old Dominion comes to Columbia.
