June (literally) blends into July. Get ready for Independence Day with Tallahassee's Celebrate America fireworks spectacular at Tom Brown Park.

Experience the creative beat of the summer heat with the Civic Chorale's colorful concert on Friday and Leon High School's anniversary performance of “The Music Man” all weekend long.

1. Civic Chorale shines in the colors of summer

The Tallahassee Civic Chorale presents its summer concert “We Sing Colors” on Friday, June 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Turner Auditorium at Tallahassee Community College.

All songs are themed in colors, like Pink Panther, Blue Moon, and of course Over the Rainbow! The concert also features solo and ensemble performances by our members. There will be an ice cream reception after the concert. Tickets can be purchased in advance at civicchorale.org or at the door. Tickets are $13 for adults, $10 for seniors and non-TCC students, and are free for TCC students and faculty/staff.

The choir offers beautiful music, camaraderie, and the opportunity to serve the community through its various civic activities. If you would like to join in the fall 2024 season, go to singer registration at civicchorale.org.

2. Jazzy nights at the Blue Tavern

Two Clever opens happy hour Friday, June 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Blue Tavern, 1206 N. Monroe St., followed by Seep & Sasha at 8 p.m. Chris Seepersaud and Sasha Tuck play jazz and other worlds brought to life through song and guitar. Admission $10.

Join the Happy Hour jam on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., led by the bitchy bunnies of the Bunny Bread Banditry. If you want to follow the strange trails through Celtic, Cajun and Canadian traditions, bring your instrument. The Jacob Wright Quintet, led by tenor saxophone player Jacob Wright, takes over intermission from 8 to 11 p.m. Admission is $10.

3. Rocking at the House of Music

Road House, a city fixture for 31 years, brings the house down on Friday, June 28, at 8 p.m. $12 at the door, 2011 S. Monroe St.

On Saturday, June 29th, guitarist Maurice Mangum will play his release show at HOM. By the time he takes the stage, he will have released 3 of 6 songs from his 2024 self-titled EP “Maurice.” If you love Don Henley, John Paul White, and all things songwriting, you'll be glad you came.

Opening the evening in support of Maurice will be Tallahassee-born singer-songwriter Madison Avery. Her music career began during her college years at Florida State University, and with her first full-length album expected to be released in late 2024, her music career is just beginning.

4. Take over the night shift

Night Shift reports for the evening shift Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Great Oaks Pub in Southwood, 3750 Grove Park Drive. The group consists of keyboards, guitar, bass and drums, with Rick Christian, Bobby Jett and Stan Gramling of Gramling's Feed Store and Sparky. The group's last performance was a packed house. Reservations at 850-942-4653. No cover charge, full bar and restaurant.

5. Get ready to dance at Fire Betty's

Dress up for a legendary disco party from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday at Fire Betty's, 1122 Thomasville Road. Dress for the occasion for the disco costume contest. The winner will receive $100 cash. The Groove Merchants are back at Fire Betty's with free live music starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 29.

It may not be Coney Island, but with the Fourth of July weekend approaching, Fire Betty's is hosting its first hot dog eating contest with prizes being awarded.

OTHER EVENTS

Melons in the park: The city of Marianna is hosting a festival called “Melons in the Park,” and Tallahassee acoustic duo Hot Tamale will provide entertainment Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon (Central Time) at the Marianna Farmers Market on Madison St.

Concert on the radio: On Saturday, June 29, WFSQ-FM and WFSL-FM, WFSU's classical music stations, will broadcast the award-winning Galvin Cello Quartet's March 26, 2024 concert. The broadcast is scheduled for 8 p.m. WFSQ will broadcast on 91.5 on the Tallahassee FM frequency, while WFSL, the Thomasville-based classical music station, will occupy 90.7 FM. Live streaming of both stations is available at wfsu.org.

The soundbar: Old Porch Swing turns up the music Friday at 7 p.m. at the Sound Bar, 1105 W. Tharpe St. Admission is $5. Saturday, June 29. Comedian Jerry Sola performs Saturday, June 29 at 7 p.m.

Tallahassee Film Society: The film “Golden Years,” a 2016 British comedy, will be presented by the Tallahassee Film Society at the IMAX Challenger Learning Center on Friday, June 28th at 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 30th at 5 p.m. The film combines humor with social commentary, highlighting the issues facing the elderly and the injustices in the financial system. Tickets are $9 for TFS members and $11 for general admission.
