Video shows huge hole in the ground on football field in Illinois after mine collapse: Watch

A video shows a huge hole in the ground in the middle of a football field in Illinois, shocking the population.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Brian Hoener, athletic director at Marquette Catholic High School, said in an interview with the Alton Telegraph, noting that their summer camp there had been held around the same time a week earlier.

According to ABC 7 Chicago, officials say the hole is about 30 feet deep and 100 feet wide. It was reportedly caused by the collapse of an underground mine. There are no reports of injuries.

In the video, the green lawn suddenly collapses and a light pole in the stadium is sucked into the ground. The collapse is followed by a mushroom cloud of grey smoke.

Park is said to be closed due to investigation

Michael Hayes, director of the Alton Parks and Recreation Department, called the sinkhole “surreal,” adding that it was “like something out of a movie,” KMOV reported.

“The mines have been here and in this area for decades,” Hayes told the outlet. “It's never been mentioned before, so I've been told it's an anomaly. We'll wait until the investigation is complete.”

“Gordon Moore Park is temporarily closed while the sinkhole investigation is completed,” Alton Parks and Recreation said.

New Frontier Materials, owner of the mine, confirmed the incident in a statement to KMOV.

“The affected area has been secured and will remain closed for the foreseeable future while inspectors and experts examine the mine and make repairs,” a spokesperson said, according to KSDK. “Safety is our top priority. We will work with the city to resolve this issue as quickly and safely as possible to minimize impact to the community.”
