Meteorologists confirm nighttime tornado in Massachusetts and Rhode Island

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado struck parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island late Wednesday night. The storm was part of a line of severe thunderstorms that moved across New England. A National Weather Service investigation team said it found evidence of a tornado that occurred late Wednesday night on a track that began in Lincoln, Rhode Island, passed through Cumberland and ended in North Attleborough, Massachusetts. “Detailed information on the intensity, exact track and nature of damage will be released later this afternoon after the investigation team has had a chance to compile all the data collected,” the National Weather Service said. The storm prompted a rare tornado warning for parts of Bristol County overnight. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency reported thousands of electric customers without power Thursday morning after severe thunderstorms swept across the state. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado struck parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island late Wednesday night. It was part of a line of severe thunderstorms that moved across New England.

A National Weather Service investigation team said it found evidence of a tornado that occurred late Wednesday night along a route that began in Lincoln, Rhode Island, passed through Cumberland and ended in North Attleborough, Massachusetts.

“Detailed information on the intensity, exact course and types of damage will be published later. [Thursday] afternoon, after the investigation team had an opportunity to compile all the data collected,” the National Weather Service said.

The storm triggered a rare late night tornado warning for parts of Bristol County.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency reported thousands of customers without power Thursday morning after severe thunderstorms swept across the state.

Heavy rains that fell over some of the same areas in Massachusetts on Wednesday evening, causing flash flooding in many communities along the Mass Pike, receded by Thursday morning.
