The park is currently closed while experts assess the damage and plan repairs. Some events have been cancelled.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker called on the federal Office of Mine Safety to investigate the collapse.

“The residents of Madison County are entitled to a thorough and well-communicated investigation of this incident to expedite their return to normalcy,” Pritzker said in a statement Thursday afternoon. “I trust the DOL will move efficiently to investigate the role of past mining activities in causing this incident and find solutions to keep the public safe.”

No injuries were reported.

A surveillance camera captured the moment the sinkhole opened, swallowing the light pole, lawn and more.
