Man receives life sentence for killing two people near a Connecticut mall

A Massachusetts man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for shooting a man and a woman in a commuter parking lot near The Shoppes at Buckland Hills in Manchester in 2020.

Gregory Crichlow, 25, of Springfield, Massachusetts, was sentenced by Judge Nuala Droney in connection with the deaths of 24-year-old Gregory Scott, Jr. and 20-year-old Jennifer Hicks, both of Massachusetts, in August 2020, according to a statement from the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice.

Crichlow was found guilty by a Hartford Superior Court jury on March 20 on two counts of murder and one count of murder with special circumstances.

“To me, this is what you call a pyrrhic victory that comes at a high price. One that, in the end, is not worth winning,” Gregory Scott Sr., Gregory Scott Jr.'s father, said during victims' statements at the sentencing. “My loss so far is much greater.”

He added that while “the damage the defendant has caused to my family is insurmountable and irreversible,” he was convinced that “justice has prevailed.”

Massachusetts man found guilty in 2020 shooting that killed two people in a commuter parking lot near a Connecticut mall

On August 2, 2020, two 911 calls reported a shooting around 2 a.m. in a commuter parking lot near The Shoppes at Buckland Hills, then known as Buckland Hills Mall in Manchester. When Connecticut State Police officers arrived at the scene, they found that about 100 vehicles had gathered in the parking lot to participate in illegal car racing in the area, court documents say.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, a witness who was in the same Jeep Wrangler as Scott and Hicks told state police investigators that she saw a pickup truck pull up, a man walk toward Scott, then shoot at her and Hicks through the driver's side window.

Both Scott and Hicks died in the days following the shooting, according to earlier reports.

Court testimony indicated that the witness had seen the truck at a gas station earlier that day. Investigators obtained video footage from that gas station and linked it to Crichlow, court records say.

Another witness showed investigators a Facebook page they believed belonged to the shooter, the arrest warrant affidavit said. The man in the profile picture matched the description of Crichlow given by the first witness, the arrest warrant affidavit said.

According to court documents, state police detectives learned of an alleged feud between Crichlow, a member of the Knox Street Gang in Springfield, and Scott, who was allegedly associated with the Sycamore Street Posse.

During the investigation, investigators reportedly found messages between Crichlow and Scott dating to April 2020 in which Scott allegedly expressed his intent to harm Crichlow, court documents say.

Investigators found messages between Crichlow and a woman that led them to believe Crichlow had been looking for Scott before the murder, the arrest warrant affidavit states. The woman allegedly warned Crichlow not to appear on others' Facebook Live feeds during the “races.”

“First and foremost, the Hartford District Attorney’s Office would like to extend our sincere condolences to the families of Gregory Scott, Jr. and Jennifer Hicks,” said District Attorney Sharmese L. Walcott.

During the sentencing, Gregory Scott Sr. thanked police and prosecutors for “fighting the good fight” and ensuring that both families “received the proper representation so that their lives were not taken in vain and justice and accountability were provided.”

“I will always mourn the loss of my son, but knowing that we can have some closure makes it a little easier to cope with,” he added.

Ericka Ortega, Jennifer Hicks' mother, said her daughter was “a great person full of life and love. She was smart, intelligent, ambitious and brave and always took risks. … The defendant took an innocent life and we prayed for justice so we could finally heal.”

In the DCJ's press release, Walcott thanked the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad, the Hampden County Sheriff's Office and the Springfield Police Department for their work on the case.
