Massachusetts governor says migrants will no longer be allowed to sleep at Logan Airport

Migrants will soon be banned from staying overnight at Boston's Logan Airport, the administration of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey announced on Friday.

From July 9th, overnight stays in the complex are prohibited.

“This decision is the result of the administration's recent efforts to open a new emergency shelter site, get more families out of shelters, and spread the message across the U.S. southern border that Massachusetts is out of shelters,” Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll said in a joint press release.

At least 100 migrants have used the airport as a makeshift shelter. Videos and photos on social media show people huddled on the floor in sleeping bags and airport furniture.

The press release states that airport staff will inform migrants about the new policy, explain their options and help them find alternative accommodation.

To make more space, a new emergency shelter was recently opened in a former prison in nearby Norfolk to house several migrants. Some of them moved into the shelter in the decommissioned Bay State Correctional Center on Wednesday afternoon.

At full capacity, the facility can accommodate up to 450 people. Eligible families will continue to be accommodated in other accommodations as soon as spaces become available, the press release states.

“The administration has worked diligently over the past few months to increase the number of families leaving their emergency shelters and moving into more stable housing. With this progress, the recent opening of a new safety net site in Norfolk, and the new nine-month length of stay rule, we are now in a position to end the practice of families staying overnight in the airport. This is in the best interest of Logan families, travelers, and employees, as the airport is not an appropriate place for people to seek shelter,” said Emergency Response Director Scott Rice. “We will continue to spread the word that there are no more emergency shelters available in Massachusetts and that families traveling to Massachusetts must prepare a plan for shelter that does not include Logan Airport or our emergency shelters.”
